Why Mini Avocado Trees?

The name "mini avocado trees" came along way back in 2003 -2005. The story is; some of the tiny trees in their original small nursery bags flowered and I cross-pollinated them by hand, using a soft paint brush! Most of these trees - under 1 m high - produced so many fruitlets that I had to prune many of them to save the trees. Two or three fruit, on each little tree, were left to grow and of course as a nurseryman, I attended to them on a daily basis. Lo and behold! Small avocado trees with large and perfectly normal avocados hanging from them in just a few months! A guy from the local news paper got to see them. He was so pleasantly surprised and shocked that he exclaimed "mini avocado trees"! He published this novelty and - peopl like you - came along to, order! The name "mini avocado trees" stuck and I'm very grateful to him ... And, of course, folks like you.Thank you

Do You Know Why Huge Trees Produce Less Avocados Per Unit Canopy Area? avopro avocado producing shell

Take a look at the drawing on the right. This avocado tree could be 10 m high and wide. This is no exaggeration, there are still plenty of such trees in old orchards. The light grey umbrela shaped part, is called the "Producing Shell". It is only 40-50 cm thick, irrespective of the size of the canopy and practically all new flowers and fruit appear and develop within this shell. The reason is flowers and fruit need light and stdudies show the practical light levels after the first  50-60 cm within the canopy, is zero. No light, No flowers or fruit. We now also know why a huge part of the inner canopy of any trees has no leaves or active shoots either.

Is there a solution to this? Can we grow small avocado trees and still harvest good number of avocados? The solution is to keep your trees small and reduce the size of the unproductive inner empty space by twice yearly light pruning.

Let's look at what is possible.Take a look at this new picture. It was shot in Feb 2012, in the greater Auckland region and the person is a semi-commercial grower. avopro avocado tree R J orchardMoral: Keep Your Avocado Trees, Small. Around 1.5 - 2 m Wide, and about 3 m High. No more!

Thousands of different avocado varieties are recorded. They are all either Type A or Type B flowering. The A variety flowers open female in the morning of day one. The flower closes around mid-day, and remains closed till mid-day next & then reopens as male. B varieties open as female in the afternoon of the first day, close in late afternoon, and re-open in the male phase, next morning. This is also very important in helping early & abundant yields, but one needs to complement it with more good practices.
